The World Environmental Day (WED) 2019 celebration, sees the exquisite city of Kano, Nigeria play host to this year’s WED 2019. The event marked yet another ground-breaking and ground-to-air annual Eco event. The celebration Tagged: ‘‘Air Pollution’’ …We cannot breathe but we can do something about the quality of the air we breathe., converged Green-Teens (Next generation Eco-warriors) from selected schools across the state with a view of imbibing the culture of being environmentally conscious and living Eco-responsibly. The amazing celebration of WED 2019, which took place in Babayaro Memorial International School Mariri Premises, Kano, Nigeria.
The event highlights selected schools (Khalid Bin Walid Secondary School, Danladi Nasidi Housing Estate Boys Secondary School & Babayaro Memorial International School) in Kano metropolis, it featured lots of remarkable, extraordinary and memorable experience/competition which includes; Awareness creation, Debate, Eco-quiz, Exhibition, and Raffle draw.
The World Environmental Day (WED) 2019 festival was organized by African Centre for Environmental Protection (ACEP) and was put into action by the Eco-Club members, Kano chapter, under the charge of Mr Francis Oguaju, Regional Coordinator (North), African Centre for Environmental Protection (ACEP).
In attendance was the Representatives of National Environmental Standard Regulation Agency (NESRA) Engr. Nasir Mukhtar, Head public Affairs (NESRA), Mr Donald Mokelu, Scientific Officer (NESRA), Representatives of Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Community Head (Zara community), Chairman Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Chair & Board Babayaro Memorial International School, Representatives of Zara community, community leaders, youth corps members, students, members of the community and friends of the earth amongst others.
The event started on a warm note, with the arrival of guests, participating students, corps members, community members and friends of the earth. A brief introduction about the sponsors and organizers AFRICAN CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (ACEP), its vision, mission and mode of operation was delivered by the Mr Francis Oguaju, Regional Coordinator, (ACEP).Afterwards, the Chair and Board BMiS, Haj Hadiza Babayaro gave the welcome address, followed by a brief lecture on Air Pollution by Mr Francis Oguaju. Miss Chidinma Ogwumba steered the quiz segment with the participating schools, whilst Mr Abdulrasheed Ogunleye moderated the debate period.
The event had seated, a 3-man panel of Judges; Haj Aishatu D. Umaru, Mr Richard Agwu and Miss Rukayat Aremu, who conscientiously scored the students during debate spell. The scores were collated by the panel of judges and in a moment, the winner/best Eco-school was announced, followed by the 1st & 2nd runners-up respectively. Gift items were awarded by the representatives of both environmental organizations (NESRA and REMASAB) and the community head (Zara community), who gave out loud commendations to the students for their brilliant efforts, accentuating the promising signs of future growth and development by the participating students. Engr. Nasir Mukhtar, Head public Affairs (NESRA), presented a giant-sized waste bin to the winning school & Best Eco-school (Babayaro Memorial International School), followed by the Representatives of Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), who presented a standard-sized waste bin to the 1st runner-up (Khalid Bin Walid Secondary School), and lastly, the community head, presented the 2nd runner-up (Danladi Nasidi Housing Estate Boys Secondary School) with a miniature-sized waste bin.
The chairman, Parents Teachers Association gave the vote of thanks and words of gratification to all the participants, representatives of the respective Federal and State Government Environmental Agencies, guests and particularly, to AFRICAN CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (ACEP), for their continued stride and outstanding contributions in the fight against environmental pollution, as well as their paramount pursuit, for sustainable development in the community and the nation at large.
Finally, the chairman concluded by calling on the government, other relevant stakeholders and friends of the earth, to key in as well as support ACEP up-scale the eminent work the organization is propagating in the community and beyond.
